An aircraft refers to objects with the capability of soaring through the air. For an object to be deemed as an aircraft, it must be used for flight in the air. Objects like kites are aircraft because they can generate lift and fly in air. Unlike airplanes, not all aircraft can gain lift because parachutes can only be used when descending. It is impossible to use a parachute to ascend above the ground as they are designed to only support a descent.

Being a sub-branch of aircraft, an airplane is a specific type of aircraft which has fixed wings. Airplanes are supported by air passing over their wings when moving at a high speed. For an airplane to take off, certain speeds must be attained to allow air to pass faster over their wings, giving them the lift needed. Air passing over their wings allows pilots to steer airplanes either to the left or to the right. Airplanes are engine-driven therefore, gliders are not considered airplanes as they lack an engine. Helicopters are also not airplanes because of being independent of using the mechanism in which air passes over their wings for them to remain suspended in air.

You can fly an aircraft by either mechanical means or forces of lift which helps them suspend itself in air. Unlike airplanes, an aircraft does not depend on an engine to fly. Each aircraft has its own unique mechanism which helps it fly through the air. For example, an aircraft like a hot air balloon depends on the mechanism that air becomes lighter when heated. The balloon can only float upwards when the air is kept warm, otherwise it begins losing altitude. Aircraft have different methods that are used to help them remain suspended in the air.

Airplanes have engines designed to power, sustain and control them as they glide through the air. Since airplanes are heavier than air, it would be impossible for them to suspend themselves in air without the help of engines. Engines ensure that a plane gains enough momentum by moving it at a high speed. The resulting force is important in making an airplane fly fast through air. All airplanes need engines to propel them, giving them enough force to maintain their altitude through air. When an airplane wants to gain a higher altitude, the engines will have to move faster to help it rise. This means that you cannot fly an airplane that does not have an engine as there is no other mechanism you can use to fly an airplane.
